The European e-commerce market is growing, and France is a big part of that growth. France is currently ranked number six in global e-commerce listings and is one of the biggest markets in Europe.
Rakuten.fr (formerly known as Priceminister) was founded in 2001 and has 22 million members and 9 million visitors per month. Which is roughly one-third of all internet users in France. Priceminister was acquired by the Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten in 2010.
The marketplace has a reported growth of 25 percent per year, making it a major part of French e-commerce. There are 5,000 professional sellers active on Rakuten.fr and over 200 million available products.
The most important categories are books, electronic goods, home and garden, shoes and handbags and health and beauty but you can sell almost anything, diversity in products is one of Rakuten.fr’s key strengths.
One of the many advantages to selling on Rakuten.fr is that you can customize your own store in order for it to reflect your brand identity. Other advantages to selling on Rakuten.fr include a super points loyalty program, super boutique listings and a ”make a wish” feature that allows you to cross-sell and increase sales by alerting the customer when a product that meets certain criteria is available.
Rakuten.fr has no restrictions on where sellers are located globally, making it the perfect platform if you’re expanding from abroad. Merchants can sell in any category.
But there are some requirements:
- To sell on Rakuten.fr, you need to be able to ship to France and manage your returns in Europe, with localized returns being preferential to customers. It is also required that EU sellers have a VAT number to adhere to local requirements for sales tax.
- You must provide English-speaking customer service. To help you manage multiple support languages.
- You’ll need to apply to sell. There is no joining fee but there is a monthly sub and that depends on where you are. Sales commissions range from 4% to 22% depending on category.
- Your products need to have French texts.
